Can we target body fat?
I get asked this all the time. It’s usually the case that somebody wants to lose body fat from a certain area of the body. Whether this be their hips, lower stomach, bum, thighs or lower back.
But can you really target burning body fat from one specific area??
The answer, unfortunately is no. It’s just not possible I’m afraid. Yes, we can burn body fat in general, but it’s down to your genetics where you store body fat easier, and where you will burn it first.
So don’t get frustrated if it take longer to burn body fat in a certain area of the body. That’s just down to the way your body stores energy. So instead of becoming more and more frustrated, stick to plan.
To burn body fat, we need to expend more energy than we consume. This is known in simpler terms as a ‘calorie deficit’. This is how to burn body fat. That’s a fact. So good nutrition is a must when it comes to this. But you can also increase the speed at which you burn body fat by increasing your activity level. Exercise will help to speed up any fat burn you are hoping for.
You can also work on toning the muscle where you want to burn fat. So, you can work on your glutes if you want to burn fat on your bum. You can work lower abs to help build a stronger core, so as you burn fat simultaneously, your abs will become flatter and more defined. But don’t get this confused with burning body fat. You cannot burn body fat without good, focused nutrition, and obviously being in a calorie deficit.
So, there we have it. Unfortunately, genetics come into it when reducing body fat, however we can increase the overall reduction of body fat throughout the whole body by combining healthy nutrition with a higher level of activity.
